Ayurvedic Treatment of Menstrual Pain

You have seen men cringe when the topic comes up. You have seen women hide the package when they buy it from a shop. You have seen it in movies. People refer to it with subtle words such as "three-day problems" and "Women's Problem." Women feel awkward just talking about it. When it comes to menstruation pain, they prefer to suffer in pain than deal with it. Most women do not even disclose the issue. More often than not, they believe it is a sign of weakness when it comes to Menstrual Pain. Be it back pain, stomach ache, or general fatigue; the preferred option is to keep quiet and endure the suffering rather than consult with a doctor.

Back in the day, women were asked to sit in a room for three days and not do anything. It is not like that anymore. It is time to put a full-stop to this. A woman must realize that this is neither something to be ashamed of nor tolerated and accepted silently. This is the time to stand up and ask for what we deserve. And we, as women, deserve the right to a healthy menstrual routine.

But firstly, let's understand what leads to menstruation pain or cramps?

  • Irregular Periods
  • You are in your mid-to-late 20s and suddenly — after having regular periods for more than a decade, your cycle stops behaving like clockwork. And you wonder. You're not pregnant, and you're nowhere near menopause, so what's the deal? The answer is Irregular periods.

Hormonal imbalance leads to Irregular periods. And the most common causes of hormonal imbalance are sharp fluctuations between estrogen and progesterone hormones, increased stress levels, weight fluctuations, and menopausal transition (between 45 to 55 years). Other causes are thyroid disorder, PCOS, use of contraceptives, cancer, and endometriosis. That's why restoring the hormonal balance is critical for regular periods.

But how do you know that your period is late? Common signs are painful cramping, abnormal bleeding duration, blood clots, breast tenderness, fluid retention, headache, early or late periods, and missed periods.

  • PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)
  • Premenstrual syndrome is common. 8 out of 10 women tend to experience slight discomfort shortly before the monthly menstrual cycle sets in. These symptoms are experienced because of the hormonal changes in the cycle. Some women experience it more severely than others, which impacts the physical, mental and emotional aspects. This has a direct effect on productivity, as well.

Most common premenstrual symptoms are divided into two groups:

Affective: depressive mood, angry outbursts, irritability, anxiety, confusion, social withdrawal

Somatic: breast tenderness, abdominal bloating, headache, swelling of extremities, cramps.

Along with the above, there are other conditions like Endometriosis, Uterine fibroids, and many more that can cause menstruation pain or cramps.

How to get relief from period cramps? When menstrual pain occurs, most of the time, it can be treated by women at home. However, if your pain is severe and impacts your lifestyle, don't be afraid to talk to your doctor.

Here are 8 home remedies for menstrual pain relief

  • Use heating pad
  • A heating pad is all you need to get some menstrual cramp relief. This is because heat relaxes uterine muscles and those adjacent to them. To fight back pain during menstruation, the heat pad can also be placed in the lower back.

  • Drink hot teas and lots of water
  • During periods, hot tea can provide menstrual pain relief. They can give much-needed comfort to your distressed muscles. Along with that, herbal teas like chamomile tea, ginger tea, peppermint tea, lavender tea, green tea, lemongrass tea, and cardamom tea can provide you with some much-needed freshness. It can also decrease the pain and relieve you from fatigue. Try to drink 6-8 glasses of water each day to improve your overall health.

  • Include ginger in your diet
  • Ginger acts as a wonder herb and plays a crucial role in lowering the levels of the pain-causing prostaglandins, for menstrual cramp relief. It also helps to fight the fatigue of premenstrual syndrome. You can also use one of the age-old recipes, such as grate ginger and boil it in a cup of water, strain it, add a little honey and lemon juice.

  • Do light exercise
  • For menstrual pain relief, try some yoga poses. Whether it's the stretching of your muscles or the relaxing effect of the poses, yoga can indeed help your cramps. You can also try walking and meditation.

  • Try to avoid coffee
  • Simple diet changes can provide menstrual pain relief. So, it's better to reduce your coffee consumption. This is because coffee is a well-known vasoconstrictor that makes blood vessels constrict. So, it may tighten the vessels that feed the uterus.

  • Avoid fatty foods
  • During your periods, fatty foods with high salt levels can impact how bloated you feel and the level of pain you experience. So, you should eat fruits that are a rich potassium source and would help ease your bowel movements, like bananas. Also, eat lentils, spinach, and legumes to your diet and add a lot of iron to your body. Overall, try to reduce fatty foods.

  • Put cinnamon in your recipes
  • Cinnamon has anti-spasmodic, anti-clotting, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are useful for menstrual pain relief. Also, it is an excellent source of fibre, calcium, iron, and manganese. So, during periods, try to take cinnamon-infused recipes. Stir one-fourth teaspoon of cinnamon powder into a cup of hot water, boil it for five minutes, add little honey and then sip it slowly. Start drinking two to three cups of cinnamon tea one to two days before your period starts to prevent cramps.

  • Massage with essential oils
  • Add drops of any essential oil to a carrier oil and give yourself a gentle massage. The ideal proportion is one drop of essential oil to one teaspoon of carrier oil. Give yourself a massage for 20 minutes for effective results. Also, while massaging, one should target specific points in the abdomen, back, and side.
