destress yourself during tough times

Since the World Health Organization declared theCOVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic, many of us, even those who have not been infected by the virus, are quarantined in our homes for the upcoming weeks. And this is the right thing to do.

The reason why this lockdown has been put in place is not only to keep ourselves safe but others too. The point is, one should not panic looking at the consequences of the lockdown. Yes, things are a bit hectic at the moment. Our travel plans are capsized. The isolation period looks indefinite as of now. Anyone and everyone is talking aboutCOVID-19. There is information overload, no matter what you google or who you call.

What we need now is to realize that there is nothing we should do right now except stay put at homes making sure that we are safe. This is not only for us but for everyone around us.

So, here comes the next question. What can we do when we are at home and ensure that we are not stressing out? Here are a few pointers that could help you survive spiralling negative thoughts about this uncertain time.

Take a look at the bigger picture

Staying in for days is bound to play tricks on your mind. The best plan is to not look at the short-term happenings, i.e. the lockdown and understand why we are doing it - to keep the world safe by preventing theCOVID-19 virus from spreading further.

We need to understand that it is not just about us anymore. We are talking about a worldwide pandemic. When we know why we are doing what we are doing, our ability to do it improves in leaps and bounds.

Take a look inside of you

There is only so much we can read, watch TV and sleep. We need to do something more profound. Don’t think of it as an ‘I am stuck inside the house’ as much as ‘I can focus on myself’. Doing one productive activity per day can lead to a more positive attitude. Transcendental meditation could help us get ourselves together during the lockdown.

Connect with the people at home with you

Active life means always having something to do. With things taking the slower lane now and kids at home full-time, it is time to spend some more time with them. Family time is a luxury that tragedy has handed to us on a silver platter. Take it with both hands and make the most of it.

Stay close to your regular routine

Get your to-do list in order. Watch out for your long-avoided tasks. Reorganize or create something you have always wanted to. Do not approach feeling trapped or stuck. This will only stress you out more. Now is the chance to slow down and focus on yourself.

Try and maintain some semblance of structure from the pre-quarantine days. It could be very easy or tempting to get into a sluggish zone, but idle minds are the workshops of the devil.

Stop overloading with information

This is the time to be smart about it. Do not obsess over the endlessCOVID-19 deluge. Avoid consulting with Google anytime anyone talks about it or shares on WhatsApp. Choose only certain credible websites (who.int or cdc.gov is a good start) for a limited amount of time each day (perhaps once or twice - 20 minutes each) This will be in your best interest during this time.
